These photographs by Stephen Lam are quietly sophisticated. They capture perfectly the way in which the current generation reflects on their Chinese family history: with both an aura of romanticism and an air of uneasiness, a beauty still and frozen, like a butterfly mounted in a case.

"The M. series is a work of gestures. My mother has not seen her family and home for 60 years. All she hangs on to are a few photographs of her brothers and sisters... All I see are those unstable gestures captured in a time capsule. Faces are buried. Some say art is just looking at old things in a new way. I can't agree more. I call it 'M' purely for the symmetry of the letter. It is far-fetched to say it is about mother or memory... although imagination is always welcome."
